Process for Evaluating the Abstracts Submitted to AlgaEurope

Since 2019, with the Paris Conference, the methodology for evaluating the submitted abstracts has been as follows:

1) Collection of Abstracts:

  • All abstracts submitted are collected by the logistics manager, DLG Markets Benelux.
  • Once the submission deadline has passed, the abstracts are sent to the duo of Hywel Griffiths and Olivier Bernard, who act as the coordinators.

2) Dispatching to Evaluators:

  • The two coordinators distribute the abstracts to 30 evaluators.
  • These evaluators are part of the two scientific and industrial committees, supported by the governing body of the EABA, namely, the steering board, vice presidents, and the president.

3) Evaluation Process:

  • Each abstract is reviewed by 2 or 3 evaluators.
  • The evaluation criteria include:
  • Maturity level
  • Novelty
  • Contribution to the field
  • Quality
  • Relevance and interest for the audience
  • Not already published or disclosed
  • Each abstract should align with the theme of the session. (See canonical sessions above.)

4) Consolidation and Final Decision:

  • The evaluations are then compiled and averaged by the two coordinators.
  • The final score determines whether an abstract can be presented orally at the conference.

5) Session Allocation:

  • For instance, if the “food” session is allocated 10 slots, the 10 highest-scoring abstracts tagged food (based on their evaluation) will be offered the opportunity for an oral presentation.
  • There are also withdrawals, and we keep a waiting list.

6) Bottom-Up Approach:

  • The organizing committee has chosen this bottom-up approach, meaning the program is not decided by a small, restricted committee, but rather reflects the actual landscape brought by the abstracts.
  • This approach is a distinctive feature of AlgaEurope, and we believe it to be one of the reasons for its success (though not the only reason).
